At Eat Out Neighbourhood Gems, our goal is simple: to highlight the local eateries that chefs around the country can’t get enough of. Our directory has made it easy to find these chef-endorsed restaurants, and diners are using the platform to find out where they should be eating next.

Since launching in July, we’ve been curious about which listings are drawing the most eyes. A look at the numbers revealed three spots across South Africa that are racking up the views online. From KuGompo City to Umdloti to Betty’s Bay, here are the three most-viewed restaurants on the directory, and what makes them worth a visit.

The Press Club
Salta Sibaya, Umdloti

Located at the Salta Sibaya Estate clubhouse, The Press Club is a family-run restaurant that was founded in 1982. Famous for their Press Club Durban Eggs (two eggs served on home-made toast, with a rich butter-bean-and-potato-curry gravy, topped with chips and crispy bacon), this restaurant is celebrated for its hearty food and feel-good vibes. Floor-to-ceiling windows look out onto expansive ocean views, and the play area outside makes it a family favourite.

On the other side of the country, Waaygat celebrates Asian flavours in a small menu that changes often. The popular restaurant (it’s advised booking ahead of time to secure a table) uses fresh, local ingredients to serve a fusion of traditional and modern dishes. Guests can also enjoy a well-crafted wine list with bottles from the Overberg and the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley.

At this spot in Berea, the kitchen team loves to experiment, as seen in their ever-changing menu. Mornings draw a steady crowd for coffee and breakfast, and the lunch menu is diverse and plentiful. Dinner offers themed-cuisine nights and multi-course Dinner Dates for those who want to make an evening of it. Plant-based diners are well looked after, with options like an aubergine schnitzel with harissa, yoghurt and Parmesan that hold their own on the menu.
