There’s no better place to be than the leafy square outside Maria’s on a summer’s evening, or on a chilly day or night in the cozy inside space. This Greek restaurant has been here for over 50 years – legend has it that Maria herself lived in the flat above and tempted passers-by with the aroma of Greek lamb and other delights. Half a century later, and nothing has changed. Fans flock here to enjoy meze from a lengthy list – the grilled halloumi with caper salsa and the dolmades are standouts, but the crispy calamari and plump olives are close contenders. You could make up a meal from the starters list alone. However, mains such as slow-cooked, meltingly tender Greek lamb; crispy grilled lamb chops; outstanding calamari and pitas filled with lamb or chicken, cannot be ignored. For dessert, the chocolate cake and the Greek rice pudding will have you loosening your belt a notch. Add friendly, efficient service and an excellent wine list, and you’ll soon be a regular, too.

Don't leave without trying:
