How Gounden’s became a Glenwood institution, one bunny chow at a time
There is no pretension here, no fancy decor, and no messing about with the family’s tried and trusted recipes.

There are eateries that develop such a loyal following over the years (or decades!) that they become a gathering place for their communities – and Gounden’s Restaurant and Takeaway in Glenwood, Durban, is a fine example.
A true family business, under the helm of the family matriarch and her children (you’ll find son Devan Gounden front of house), Gounden’s has been serving what some say are the best bunny chows in Durban for 15 years at this location, but the business traces its origins all the way back to 1985!
There is no pretension here, no fancy decor, and no messing about with the family’s tried and trusted recipes. After a recent visit for a bite of bunny and breyani, Eat Out culinary director Abigail Donnelly says: “It’s very casual and laid-back – you’ll spot crates of white bread lining the wall, busy queues and customers at every table. It’s not about the decor – it’s about food and the community. Expect generous portions and plenty of gravy!”
The signature dish and all-round favourite is undoubtedly the mutton bunny, but you’d also be well-advised to try the fish curry and the mutton breyani (when on special). And keep an eye out for seasonal treats such as crab curry – when the family can lay their hands on some fresh crab. Enjoy these flavourful dishes with add-ons including chilli, mint or veg pickle and wash it down (as most customers do) with an ice-cold Coke. And definitely consider leaving some space for a portion of trifle to take home.
In a world of fly-by-night food fads and franchises that come and go, it’s heartening to see that a place like Gounden’s, which trades in consistency and a reputation for well-made, moreish food, can barely keep up with the demand.
